Mission statement
We at ukA strive to provide more eco-friendly clothing and life-products. It is not easy to find affordable eco-friendly suppliers for a small fashion company, but we are getting better at it – though we are the first to admit that we still have a long long way to go. With this website we hope to share some of our eco-friendly products along with our experiences and thoughts.
Sadly the fashion industry is a big contributor to global warming… this is something we have learned as we have grown. Our hope with this website is to share some information to help spread more awareness and encourage people to try to limit their impact on the environment. We will get into more details on our blog but just consider all the (fossil) fuel that gets used for transportation and electricity required to produce any garment. And in the case of polyester, nylon, lycra and all other plastic fibers the material itself is made from oil, once discarded and incinerated the CO2 imbedded in the plastic is released into the atmosphere. To grow cotton and many other natural fibers farmers mainly use chemical fertilizer which is produced using natural gas (another CO2 source). In fast fashion culture clothes gets discarded and replaced after much shorter usage, this means that the cycle just described happens much more often. Apart from green-house gases such as CO2, there are many other problems for nature that comes with fashion, such as contaminates to soil and water. Like most people we did not fully realize all this when we started but now we at ukA are trying harder to reduce the environmental impact by using more organic fibers produced in a sustainable way; natural dyes; clothes that lasts longer; and encourage better choices for a more sustainable life.
